⏳ Right now these are still estimates from historical records because this season’s real weather has not started counting yet (real weather used, avg 0%) — the numbers get more accurate from mid-Feb 2027 onwards Fine for rough planning, but do not lock in travel dates from this page alone

Where do these numbers come from?

🌸 Cherry blossom — heat accumulation rule

Daily temperatures are accumulated from 1 February using the rules Japanese forecasters really use: the 400℃ rule daily mean temperatures summed to 400℃, and the 600℃ rule daily highs summed to 600℃ — then we average both results

🍁 Autumn leaves — cumulative chill index

Maples start turning when daily lows drop below ~8℃ and speed up below 5℃ We accumulate that value max(0, 12℃ − lowest temperature) from 1 August A year that turns cold early really does redden leaves early

⚖️ Per-spot calibration

The 400/600℃ rules were built for Tokyo; applied straight to Hokkaido they go wrong So we run the model on each spot’s “normal weather year” first, then shift the result to match the norm JMA 1991–2020 for that spot, before applying it to this year’s real weather

📡 Data sources

Daily temperatures from Open-Meteo (ERA5 observations + 16-day forecast) Dates beyond that use the past 10 -year average for that spot The “confidence” value shows what percentage uses real weather

⚠️ These are estimates, not official announcements — the Japan Meteorological Agency and forecast companies (tenki.jp, Weathernews, 日本気象) offer no free sakura/autumn-leaf forecast API so the numbers here are computed from temperature and can be off by ±3–7 days especially in years with wild swings before bloom. Check official announcements again before you travel

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this forecast?
It is computed from past actual temperatures and forecasts, not an official announcement. The margin is about 3–7 days, and it narrows as bloom nears because more real weather is used. Always check the “confidence” value for each spot, then check official announcements again before booking.
What is the difference between “bloom (開花)” and “full bloom (満開)”?
開花 is the day the first 5–6 flowers open on a benchmark tree; 満開 is the day over 80% of the tree is open. They are usually about 7 days apart on Honshu and 3–5 days in Hokkaido. The best window for photos runs from full bloom for another 3–5 days.
When should I book so I do not miss the sakura?
To be safest, pick dates covering the full-bloom day with 3 days before and 4 days after, and plan a backup city that blooms later or earlier — if Tokyo has dropped, you can still head north or up into the mountains.
Where do the autumn leaves start?
They start in Hokkaido and the high mountains from late September–October, then move south. Kyoto and Tokyo peak mid to late November, and Kyushu can run into early December. Drag the date slider on this page to see the status of each city on your dates.
What if I miss the peak?
Moving to a city at a different elevation helps a lot — mountains turn about 2–4 weeks earlier than cities — and once petals or leaves have fallen there are usually night illumination events instead. Try the trip budget calculator to see how much prices change if you shift your dates
