Japan Trip Budget Calculator

What will this Japan trip cost?

Pick your dates and party size, then your cities — we count the nights, check for cherry blossom, autumn leaves or Japanese long holidays, and adjust hotel and flight prices to match right away Based on real 2026 prices and compared with actual Thai visitor spending from the Japan Tourism Agency

1 · When, and how many

Pick your real out and back dates and we count the nights, then tell you which Japanese season they fall in (cherry blossom · autumn leaves · Golden Week etc.), because hotel and flight prices vary hugely by period.

2 · What style of trip

Pick a style and every category adjusts automatically

3 · Which cities

Pick several cities — we average hotel costs across them and add intercity travel

4 · Flights

We try to pull live fares from a flight search; if that fails we use seasonal reference prices

⚠️ 3 changes coming — plan ahead
• 1 Oct 2026 JR Pass prices rise at overseas agents (7 days ¥50,000 → ¥53,000) but the official site keeps the old price — if you’re buying, buy online before that date
• 1 Nov 2026 Tax refunds become “pay in full, claim on your departure day” — scan your passport at the airport before checking your bags. The money arrives later, so carry the extra 10% in cash for the trip and allow more airport time (See the new refund steps)
• 1 Apr 2027 Tokyo’s lodging tax becomes 3% of the room rate and will cover hostels/capsules too

Frequently asked questions

Where do these numbers come from?
Hotel, food, entry fee and JR Pass prices reference real 2026 rates, with sources listed at the foot of the page. Exchange rates are pulled live each time you open the page, and results are compared with actual Thai visitor spending from the Japan Tourism Agency.
Why is cherry blossom season so much pricier?
Because hotels in the main cities go up 40–50% and flights hit high-season fares, so we adjust the figures automatically for your dates. Shifting even 1–2 weeks usually cuts the total noticeably — change the dates and compare right away.
What’s in the total, and what isn’t?
It includes flights, hotels, food, city and intercity travel, entry fees, shopping, SIM, insurance and a reserve. It excludes visa fees (Thais need none for stays up to 15 days), travel to the airport in Thailand, and personal items bought before you go.
How much cash should I bring?
About ¥5,000–8,000 per person per day for small shops, markets and temples; use cards or an IC card for the rest. More on money and exchanging it at the money and etiquette page
Is a JR Pass worth it?
It depends how often you change cities and how far. Tick the JR Pass box in step 5 and we compare it against point-to-point tickets instantly. Since the 2023 price rise, trips covering 2–3 cities often aren’t worth it and a regional pass works out cheaper.
What else should I sort out before flying?
Register Visit Japan Web in advance, get a SIM or eSIM and travel insurance and check nothing you’re packing is on the prohibited list
