Pick a month by what matters to you

📌 Rules that hold every year Avoid Apr 29–May 6 (Golden Week) · mid-August (Obon) · Dec 28–Jan 4 (New Year) if you can choose your dates — the whole of Japan travels at once, so everything is expensive and full not just hotels, but domestic trains and flights too

Frequently asked questions

Which month is the best value for Japan?
If measured by good weather, few people, and inexpensive prices, the answer is "after Golden Week to early June" and "October." During these two periods, the weather is comfortable, there is not much rain, and accommodation prices are at normal to lower than normal levels. The cheapest part is actually in the middle of June, which is the rainy season. and late January to mid-February
Which months to avoid on a tight budget?
Late March to mid-April (cherry blossom) · Apr 29–May 6 (Golden Week) · mid-August (Obon) · mid to late November (peak autumn leaves) and Dec 28–Jan 4 (New Year). In all five, hotels rise 40–50% and flights go to high-season rates.
Which month for a first trip?
If budget is no object, April and November are the prettiest. For an easy trip without the crush, go in May after Golden Week or in October — both have great weather and cost noticeably less than peak.
Should you avoid the rainy and typhoon seasons?
June’s rainy season is not as bad as it sounds: rain usually comes in bursts rather than all day, and it is the cheapest month. September sees the most typhoons — if you go, insure against flight delays and keep a backup plan.
